Fee for Treatment of Patients’ Choice (A Special Fee called “Sentei Ryoyo-hi”)
Currently, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare is promoting a role-sharing system among medical institutions (especially between clinics and general hospitals). Under this system, in addition to the first-visit fee, patients are required to pay a special fee fixed by each hospital, if it has 400 beds or more and they don’t have a referral letter from a clinic or another medical institution.
If you are a new patient to this hospital and you do not have a referral letter from another medical institution authorized by the national health insurance system, you will therefore be asked to pay the special fee called “Sentei Ryoyo-hi” in addition to the first-visit fee.
If you undergo specific health care that is publicly funded or if you are taken to the hospital by ambulance, you are not required to pay this fee.
